Private · Lesson 1 · ~7 min
Before you buy.
Foundations Lesson 3 showed that ~80 % of a laptop's lifetime CO₂ is in manufacturing. Lesson 4 ranked the 4 R's, with Reuse at the top. Both lead to the same place: the most impactful private decision is not buying new.
This lesson is about that decision. When you genuinely need a different device — what should you actually buy, and where?
The hierarchy of acquisition
Order matters here too
1. Don't buy at all. Can a software fix, repair, or repurposing of what you already own solve the problem? You will see this in Lessons 2 and 3.
2. Borrow or share. For occasional needs — printing, scanning, the once-a-year video editing — a friend's hardware, a neighbour's, or a public resource (library, Fablab Lëtzebuerg) avoids the purchase entirely.
3. Buy second-hand or refurbished. The manufacturing footprint has already been paid by the previous owner. Refurbished (from a professional reseller with warranty) is usually safer than private second-hand. Both are dramatically better than new.
4. Buy new only as a last resort. And if you do, buy something built to last: modular, repairable, well-supported. The EU Repairability Index (A–E rating, mandatory on smartphones and tablets since 20 June 2025) tells you at a glance how serviceable a new device will be.

If you must buy new
Make it count
Three criteria worth applying:
• Repairability score. The EU mandates an A–E rating for smartphones and tablets sold in the EU since 20 June 2025. "A" means easy to disassemble, parts widely available, software support guaranteed. Pick A or B if you can — the few euros saved on a C-rated device come back as years of frustration later.
• Long software support. Apple gives ~6 years of iOS updates; Google Pixel and Samsung high-end Android now guarantee 7 years. Mid-range Android phones often get 3 years and then stop. The longer the support, the longer the device stays usefully secure.
• Modularity, where it still exists. Framework Laptop (released 2021) is the textbook example: every major component — mainboard, ports, screen, keyboard, battery — is user-replaceable. Fairphone has done the same for smartphones since 2013. These cost more upfront but pay back over time.
Why this matters for the rest of the path
Connecting the dots
• Lesson 2 — Repair Smart. The 65 % rule applied to your phone and laptop, where to get help in Luxembourg, what the EU Right to Repair regime (in force July 2026) actually means for you.
• Lesson 3 — Make It Last Longer. Software tricks that extend hardware life: Linux when Windows drops support, cloud-offload, repurposing into media centres and kids' computers.
• Lesson 4 — End of Life Done Right. Wiping data properly, donating to Digital Inclusion, when SuperDrecksKëscht is the right route.
